Additions to the Farmyard

You may have seen them before. They waddle across their small enclosure in the farmyard. When one stops to drink from the bucket, the rest of them pause to take a sip as well. What are these creatures?

Ducks.

In the past few years, the farmyard has expanded: improving the coops, the goat houses, and even adding a new goat, two rabbits, and ducks. There are seven new ducklings in the farmyard. They have taken over their small enclosure and have begun to make it their new home, hiding under the log. Small and fuzzy, you cannot deny their cuteness. I asked a couple of middle schoolers what they thought was the most interesting aspect of the new additions to the farmyard family.

Eva Healy, an eighth grader, answers immediately: “Their beaks.”

“But, when they were little, they had these little, teeny, tiny wings that were so much smaller than the rest of [their body],” Anacelia Moore, a sixth grader, says. “That was my favorite part.”

While these ducklings are the newest thing this month, they didn’t top the overall hype that Neville, the newest floppy-eared goat, brought earlier this year. In the excitement over the arrival of the new rabbits, the ducklings were nearly forgotten.

By now, these water-loving birds have probably already grown past their cute duckling age, but don’t worry, you haven’t missed all the farmyard highlights! There are nearly 40 chickens in the farmyard today. The middle schoolers’ favorites include the Polish chickens, skinny birds with a big afro of feathers, and the fluffy roosters. Besides the goats, chickens are the longest-reigning animal of the farmyard.

Like the love that the animals bring to The Gregory School campus, the middle schoolers’ dedication to the farmyard is never-ending. Many students look forward to seeing the animals everyday and think of the farmyard as a way to take a break from school. The farmyard is an important part of our campus that everyone should visit at least once in their years at TGS.
