This serves as the first article in a new, culinary-related column that offers food reviews of restaurants located near The Gregory School. The first restaurant to be reviewed is Jimmy’s New York Pizza on the corner of River and Craycroft, next to Whole Foods.
The atmosphere is welcoming and pleasant right from the entrance. The large bar area and lighting truly makes you feel like you are dining in a little pizza place on a secluded street in New York City. The ambiance was calm, but it would have been nice to hear some music in the background to break the silence.
The service was very good, and the server was welcoming and funny. The food came after only 14 minutes.
Jimmy’s offers a wide variety of pies: The Cardiobaby, The Southwest Heat, and the Passyunk’s Original are the pizzas reviewed.
The Cardiobaby pie is the restaurant’s take on a meat lovers pizza. It is constructed with pepperoni, ham, sausage, meatballs, and bacon. Each type of meat complements the next one, creating a really tasty pie.
If you like steak, specifically cheese steak, the Passyunks Original is for you. The bell peppers and melted cheese along with the juicy bits of meat make you feel like you’re eating a perfect mix of a philly cheese steak and pizza.
The last pie and the all-around favorite was the Southwest Heat, a pie inspired by the iconic taste of buffalo wings. The buffalo sauce drizzled on the perfectly cooked chicken ties this pizza together. It takes the #1 spot out of these three pies, due to its perfect combination of buffalo wings and pizza.
The meal was finished off with a delicious ice cream cookie and strawberry cheesecake. The contrast between the cold vanilla ice cream and the warm, fresh-baked cookie lead to a polished plate. The strawberry cheesecake kept a good balance between the sweet interior and the bitter crust.
In the end, Jimmy’s New York Pizza is a great option for TGS students to grab decently-priced, tasty pizza after school. The outstanding service along with delicious pizzas allowed for a wonderful dining experience!
