As a part of his senior internship project, Stryder Rodenberg constructed two ping pong tables, not knowing they would take over the Gregory School community. Throughout this year, students in both the middle school and upper school have been infatuated with the new tables, sparking a love for the game. Upper School students can be seen in long lines, rallying around the table in the science courtyard, waiting for their chance to prove their skill.
The game had become such a hit that the Family Association decided to start a school-wide ping pong tournament, with the finals being held at half-time of the Homecoming basketball game against Morenci. Leading up to the finals, two brackets were held: one determining the middle school champion, and the other, the upper school champion. With games being played during lunch throughout the week, students faced off in games to 11 points. The upper school semifinalists were Dylan Pace (9th), Wilder Cooke (12th), Stryder Rodenberg (12th), and Drew Messing (11th). For the highschool finals, Wilder Cooke came out on top with an intense win against Drew Messing. As for the middle school, Vikram Narendran of the 6th grade pulled through with a win against 8th grader Edan Winter.
Wilder and Vikram faced off in the finals on Homecoming night, and after an energetic match, Wilder Cooke walked away with the 11 to 6 victory. However, both competitors still received a $50 prize. Although the tournament has come to an end, the Hawk’s ping pong spirit still flies high.
