Pythagorean Triple

Whether this is your first year at the Gregory School, or you have been here for all of high school, there are three standout students who have most likely caught your eye. Andriy Myloserdnyy, Wilder Cooke, and Tommy Belk-Arenas are three seniors of the class of 2020 who share a lot in common. If you know any of them, you most likely are aware of their unrivaled brilliance. Each member of the trio is in the Math Club, where they like to claim they “are the top scorers.”

When asked about how his year is going so far, Tommy described it as very relaxed. He says that one of his largest accomplishments this year is that he, “finally finished enough credits to get [his] degree, and [he] just took the second semester to relax.” Tommy isn’t always seen on campus, because of his dual enrollment at Pima Community College, where he successfully earned an associate’s degree. Spending most of his time in the Fab Lab, his goal for the end of the year is to make something “actually useful.”

Wilder had a much simpler answer. “All right. Quote me on it,” he said when asked about his year. Although he is frustrated with his homework levels, Wilder’s main goal is to work on improving his AP Chemistry grade.

Similarly, Andriy describes this year as, “Swell. I’m just vibing.” His goal, however, was not academically related. He wished to get onto a normal sleeping schedule by the end of the year.

The boys are all involved in some sort of club or sport. Alongside all being in the Math Club, Tommy is a member of the golf team, and Wilder is a part of the soccer and tennis team. He claims he is going to win the tennis state title this year.

Tommy and Wilder both agreed that their favorite memory of high school was when they flew paper airplanes down into a hotel lobby from the 9th story on the senior trip. Andriy transferred to TGS halfway through his junior year, which gave him a much smaller window to think of his favorite memory. He ended up saying his favorite memory was, “probably when I met you, Sean.”

As far as their favorite classes go, they are all very interested in STEM. Tommy likes his Calculus 3 class that he is enrolled in at Pima. Wilder enjoys his AP Physics class, and Andriy, Organic Chemistry.

When asked about advice for freshman, Wilder said, “In the words of Stryder, don’t start vaping.” Tommy added, “Dream big. Just do it,” and Andriy talked about the importance of doing math homework. He seemed displeased when talking about how he had to teach some students to cross multiply the other day.

The boys gave some irregular answers when talking about how they would describe each other. Tommy said that he would rather describe Wilder with something that Wilder said, which was instantly followed by Wilder exclaiming, “I have the reflexes of a mongoose on amphetamines.” “Yeah...like that,” Tommy added. Wilder claims that Andriy has “the angles of a South-African diamond cutter.” Andriy described Wilder as, “A hidden genius: a wizard in the bottle.” As for Tommy both of them agreed that one of the first words to come to mind was “tall.”

Each one of these young men brings something special to the Gregory School community, and for that reason, they will surely be missed next fall.
